Beautiful County Kerry

Below is my list in no particular order of the most beautiful tourist attractions in county Kerry

1. Devils Punchbowl corrie lake Scenic corrie lake near the summit of Mangerton mountain County Kerry, Ireland in winter. This lake is commonly know as the “Devils punchbowl”. According to local legend chieftain O’Donogue Ross dined with the Devil here one evening, and punched him in the face. As O’Donogue Ross was leaving the devil bit off the top of Mangerton Mountain, and threw it at the departing chieftain. It missed him but the result of the impact created the beautiful corrie lake.

4. Ross Castle The ancestral home of the O Donoghue clan this beautiful castle was built in the late 15th century. It is located just outside Killarney
5. Gap of Dunloe The Gap of Dunloe is one of the most beautiful glaciated valleys in the world. Beginning at Kate Kearneys cottage it extends for 7 miles with the Macgillycuddy reeks mountain range on one side and the Purple mountains on the other. There are 5 small beautiful lakes along the route of the Gap and an old arch bridge called the ‘Wishing Bridge’. The Gap is about a 15 minute drive from Killarney

7. Ardfert Cathedral Located in the town of Ardfert this cathedral is built on the ruins of a monastery founded in the 6th century by St Brendan the navigator. Very extensive ruins survive which date from the 13th to 15th centuries. The roof was destroyed during during the Cromwellian invasions in 1641
8. Muckross House This magnificent Tudor style mansion was designed by Scottish architect William Burn and constructed in 1843 for Henry Aruthur Herbert and his family. Today the house and gardens are state owned and are open to the public

13. Ladies view Beautiful viewing area over the lakes of Killarney given its name by Queen Victoria’s visit to the area in 1861. It is located about 10 miles outside Killarney on the Kenmare road.
